UAV Inspection – Port of Dover Marine Principal Inspections

UAV Inspection – Port of Dover Marine Principal Inspections

Weathered dock wall with tires at Port of Dover

About

Cloudcam UAV Ltd was engaged by Haskoning to support a condition survey of multiple marine assets at the Port of Dover. The objective was to capture high-resolution aerial and ground-based datasets to assess the condition of quay walls and associated infrastructure, without disrupting ongoing port operations.

The challenge

Surveying within an active port environment presents a number of logistical and safety challenges, including:

  • Operating safely around vessels, vehicles and active logistics operations

  • Working within strict port security and operational constraints

  • Accessing marine structures without the need for over-water scaffolding or lane closures

  • Capturing accurate data in a complex and dynamic environment

Our Approach

Planning & Coordination

Working closely with the client and port authorities to understand asset requirements, operational constraints and ensure all permissions and safety protocols were in place.

Data Capture

High-resolution UAV surveys carried out across multiple berths, supported by ground-based imagery to capture areas not visible from the air.

Data Processing & Modelling

Photogrammetric processing used to generate accurate orthomosaics and detailed 3D models of quay walls and marine structures.

Data Integration & Review

Datasets hosted within Bentley iTwin, enabling engineers to remotely inspect assets, annotate defects and compare against existing and historical records.

Results & Deliverables

  • Georeferenced orthomosaics of quay walls and structures

  • Detailed 3D digital models for virtual inspection

  • Condition data suitable for defect identification and asset management

  • Structured datasets for integration with existing engineering records

Outcome

The project enabled a comprehensive condition assessment without interrupting port operations or requiring intrusive access methods. By combining UAV and ground-based capture with structured digital outputs, the solution improved efficiency, enhanced safety and supported long-term asset management for the client.
